The year 2022 marked the 150th year since Samuel and Harriet Barber, both formerly enslaved people, purchased 42.5 acres of land from the South Carolina Land Commission in 1872. That the Historic Harriet Barber House continues to sit on this property is no small feat, particularly since African American families throughout the south have and continue to face various forms of racial and economic discrimination — including widespread land dispossession.
